Kinesio.. what? What is a Kinesiologist?

Kinesiology is the study of human movement, performance, and function. Kinesiologists design and implement exercise programs that analyze your posture, movement patterns, and your body's strength and flexibility. Kinesiologists are highly knowledgeable in areas of science such as biomechanics, anatomy and physiology, as they also consider neurological and psychological factors. In addition, they perform manual therapy such as massage or soft tissue techniques and shockwave therapy to help relieve pain and improve exercise performance. Our Kelowna Kinesiologists hold a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science and fall under some of the most rigorous standards in Canada

Who should see a Kinesiologist?

Our Kinesiologists in Kelowna work with people of all ages and physical capabilities to help them achieve their health and wellness goals. Some specific areas of exercise prescription that make Kinesiology different than other fitness professions include the ability to create exercise programs for people with health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular issues or pulmonary ailments. Furthermore, they are very knowledgeable in lifestyle change and weight loss.

Car Accidents - Kinesiologists are fundamental in a person's return to work, including ICBC rehabilitation after a car accident. After a motor vehicle injury, a Kinesiologist can help strengthen and restore the body’s standard movement patterns to reduce pain. ICBC offers 12 Kinesiology sessions to anyone who has been involved in a car accident.

Athletes- It is great to work with a Kinesiologist when training for a specific sport because they are incredibly knowledgeable in improving performance. Our Kelowna Kinesiologists also help prepare the body for longevity to ensure you have an extensive career doing what you love.

What is the difference between Physiotherapy and Kinesiology?

Physiotherapy is a therapy that treats acute and chronic injuries and conditions. Physiotherapy often focuses on one area causing discomfort, often through manual therapy and movement.

Kinesiology is more of active rehabilitation and assists in preventing or rehabilitating an injury or other conditions. Kinesiology helps bridge the gap between Physiotherapy and everyday functional movement and exercise routines. Kinesiology focuses on the body as a whole rather than one specific area. For example, if someone feels pain in their shoulder – a kinesiologist will focus on the shoulder and other regions such as the hips, as the hips might be adding to the discomfort.

Why is it important to correct my form now versus later? Is it too late for me to start working with a Kinesiologist?

If not treated correctly, our injuries worsen over time, even if we are not experiencing direct pain. Our bodies often tend to overcompensate and mask problems that change the bodies overall movement patterns. If this occurs over a prolonged period, our body will begin to develop nagging injuries. These injuries can have a longer recovery time versus the initial injuries’ recovery. Therefore, the sooner the Move RX kinesiologists address your injuries, the better. Book your appointment today!

How can I make the best of my at-home recovery? (I might not have a lot of time or any special equipment.)

Generally speaking, no major special equipment will be needed at home. Sometimes simple equipment such as bands or a ball could be required. It is vital to complete your at-home therapy exercises as directed by your Kinesiologist, as it reduces or eliminates the pain you experience. Often, you only need 10-15 minutes per day to see a difference. Our Kinesiologists work with you to create a plan that fits your daily schedule. Book an initial consultation appointment here, and see how we can achieve your ultimate goal of feeling great again.

How often should I see a Kinesiologist?

The simple answer is that it varies between individuals and their initial reason for working with a kinesiologist. We recommend twice a week to start. Creating a foundation of proper movement patterns is very important; our bodies can unconsciously move improperly when injured to compensate for something else.

Our Kelowna Kinesiologist team works with you to understand your movements, what to watch out for and how to become more spatially aware. We coach our clients to be mindful of falling back into old movement habits – which is where our injuries can stem from. Some clients see our Kinesiologists once a week, and some see us once a month indefinitely. Set up an initial session with our Kinesiologists, and we will work with you to set up a plan that works the best for you. See about our other services here.
